They are slow because too much has been loaded onto the page.

Short answer

Website speed comes down to three things: where the site is hosted, whether the response comes from a cache, and how much code and how many images the browser has to download at all. The first two can usually be sorted out in a couple of hours. The third is what actually makes sites slow, and a caching plugin will not fix it. Massruum measures the site, finds the causes and fixes them. The data did not show that. The median score for sites with a builder was 58, and the median for sites without one was also 58. All three sites that reached the green band were built without a builder, but the slowest sites in the sample included hand-coded and hosted-platform sites too.

The defensible conclusion is that it is not the tool, it is how much gets loaded with it. Divi and Elementor both do a solid job, and we use Divi on some client projects by choice, because it is quick to build with and the client can edit the content afterwards. Sites go slow when every section gets an animation and the page gets three sliders.

The full method, sample and raw data are in our Estonian website speed study.

Measuring

Which number counts, desktop or mobile?

The mobile one. Google evaluates sites on their mobile version and most visitors arrive on a phone. A hundred points on desktop looks good, but it is not the number the search engine decides on.

That is why we always state our own numbers together with the device. massruum.ee scores 100 on desktop with an LCP of 0.4 seconds, measured 13.08.2026. The same page moves between 80 and 100 on mobile, because the Lighthouse mobile test simulates a weaker processor and a narrower connection and the result shifts between runs. Anyone showing you only a desktop score is showing you the better half.

One figure on its own does not say much either. Look at LCP, which shows when the largest element appears, TBT, which shows how long the page ignores clicks, and CLS, which shows how much the content jumps around while loading.

How we work

What we do when a site is slow

We start by measuring, not by quoting. If it turns out the site can be sorted in a couple of hours, we say so and do a couple of hours of work. If it turns out the theme code has grown to the point where fixing it costs more than a new site, we say that too.

We measure the site in Lighthouse on desktop and mobile, several times, because the result varies

We work out where the weight comes from: images, scripts, fonts, plugins, redirects

We fix them in the order that puts the biggest win first

We measure again and hand over before-and-after numbers you can verify yourself

Speed optimisation starts at 400 euros.
