The median mobile score was <strong>58 out of 100<\/strong> and the median load time (LCP) was <strong>8.2 seconds<\/strong>. Only 3 of the 60 sites (5%) scored green (90+), while 88% loaded in over four seconds on mobile. The most common causes were the same on nearly every site: unnecessary redirects, unused JavaScript and unused CSS. It&#8217;s less about the platform than about how much gets loaded onto the page.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We tell clients every day that site speed is a business question, not a technical detail. But how slow are Estonian small-business sites really? I decided to measure it rather than guess. I took 60 random Estonian small-business websites &#8211; services, retail and manufacturing, from across the country, not our own clients &#8211; and ran them all through the same Google mobile speed test. Geographically from Tallinn to Saaremaa, Tartu to the Narva area. <strong>None of them is our client.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Metric:<\/strong> Google Lighthouse mobile speed test (the same engine behind pagespeed.web.dev). A simulated mid-range phone on a slow connection &#8211; exactly what Google uses to judge your site.<\/li><li><strong>Score:<\/strong> we computed each site&#8217;s Lighthouse mobile score (0-100) using Google&#8217;s published formula from five core metrics: FCP, Speed Index, LCP, Total Blocking Time and CLS.<\/li><li><strong>Time and scope:<\/strong> all measurements taken on 21 July 2026, one run per site. Results are anonymized &#8211; we don&#8217;t name or shame any site, we look at the overall picture. A single run varies a little, especially on Total Blocking Time, so treat individual numbers as an indicator, not exact science.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Results: a median of 58 points and 8 seconds<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the headline numbers for the whole sample. A green Lighthouse score starts at 90, yellow is 50-89, and red is under 50.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table><thead><tr><th>Metric<\/th><th>Result (across 60 sites)<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Median mobile score<\/td><td><strong>58 \/ 100<\/strong> (range 30-95)<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Green (90+)<\/td><td>3 sites &#8211; <strong>5%<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Red (under 50)<\/td><td>14 sites &#8211; <strong>23%<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Under 90 (below the &#8220;good&#8221; line)<\/td><td><strong>95%<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Median LCP (largest content paint)<\/td><td><strong>8.2 s<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>LCP over 4 seconds<\/td><td><strong>88%<\/strong> of sites<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>LCP over 10 seconds<\/td><td>40% of sites (slowest was 32 s)<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Median FCP (first content paint)<\/td><td>3.4 s<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Unstable layout (CLS over 0.1)<\/td><td>20% of sites<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In short: <strong>a typical Estonian small-business site loads in eight seconds on mobile and doesn&#8217;t come close to Google&#8217;s &#8220;good&#8221; zone.<\/strong> Google considers LCP good below 2.5 seconds &#8211; exactly one site in our sample made it under that line.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why 8 seconds is a problem<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speed affects two things at once. First, Google rankings: site speed and Core Web Vitals are a direct ranking factor, so a slow site ranks lower. Second &#8211; and more directly &#8211; sales. Most of your visitors arrive on a phone, and every second of load time loses some of them before they&#8217;ve even seen your site. Eight seconds means a large share have already left.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Important: these are lab numbers, on a simulated mid-range phone over a slow connection. On fast wifi with a new iPhone the same site will feel quicker. But lab conditions are exactly how Google judges your site, and exactly where you meet the customer on a bus with poor reception. Three things recurred on nearly every site:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Unnecessary redirects &#8211; 93% of sites.<\/strong> The page sends the browser from one address to another before anything starts loading. Each hop adds time, especially on mobile.<\/li><li><strong>Unused JavaScript &#8211; 92% of sites.<\/strong> A pile of code is loaded that this page doesn&#8217;t actually use. It usually comes from plugins and themes that load everything just in case.<\/li><li><strong>Unused CSS &#8211; 88% of sites.<\/strong> Same story with stylesheets: the page pulls down a whole library and uses a fraction of it.<\/li><\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>46 of the 60 sites (77%) carried all three at once.<\/strong> None of them alone is a catastrophe, but together they make that eight-second loader. And notice what is <em>not<\/em> on this list as a cause: &#8220;too nice a design&#8221;. Slowness doesn&#8217;t come from a site being too good &#8211; it comes from ballast nobody has cleaned up.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is the page builder to blame?<\/h2>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1440\" src=\"https:\/\/massruum.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/chart-platforms-en.png\" alt=\"Platforms behind Estonian small-business websites - 63% WordPress, 47% use a page builder\" class=\"wp-image-1471\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/massruum.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/chart-platforms-en.png 2400w, https:\/\/massruum.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/chart-platforms-en-300x180.png 300w, https:\/\/massruum.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/chart-platforms-en-1024x614.png 1024w, https:\/\/massruum.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/chart-platforms-en-768x461.png 768w, https:\/\/massruum.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/chart-platforms-en-1536x922.png 1536w, https:\/\/massruum.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/chart-platforms-en-2048x1229.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2400px) 100vw, 2400px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I expected an obvious culprit: page builders, known for their weight. 38 of the 60 sites ran on WordPress, and about half of those used a builder. And it&#8217;s true: the slowest sites in the sample were heavy, heavily-loaded builder sites, one of them with a 32-second LCP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>But the data won&#8217;t let me say the builder itself is the cause.<\/strong> Sites with and without a builder had exactly the same median score &#8211; 58. The fastest sites in the sample used no builder at all, but there were plenty of slow non-builder sites too (heavy Wix and hand-coded sites loaded just as slowly). So the honest conclusion is this:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The question isn&#8217;t so much <em>what<\/em> a site is built with, but <em>how much<\/em> gets loaded onto it. A builder makes it easy to pile on ballast, but you can build a slow site without one &#8211; and a properly built builder site can be perfectly reasonable.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We don&#8217;t use page builders ourselves, and <a href=\"https:\/\/massruum.ee\/en\/why-we-dont-use-page-builders\/\">we&#8217;ve written up the reasons separately<\/a>. But this study doesn&#8217;t say &#8220;builder = bad&#8221;. It says &#8220;unchecked ballast = slow&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">By sector<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The slowest sector was retail (median score 52) &#8211; logical, since shops and webshops carry more images, product galleries and payment scripts. Services were fastest (62) and manufacturing sat in between (58). No sector came close to what you&#8217;d call good.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you can do with your own site &#8211; for free<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Put your address into <a href=\"https:\/\/pagespeed.web.dev\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pagespeed.web.dev<\/a> and look at the mobile score. If it&#8217;s under 50, you&#8217;re in the red zone, and the likely causes, in order, are:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Images.<\/strong> Multi-megabyte photos uploaded straight from a camera or phone are the fastest way to make a site slow. Correct sizing and a modern format (WebP) fixes most of it.<\/li><li><strong>Plugins and code ballast.<\/strong> Every plugin brings its own JavaScript and CSS, often onto pages that don&#8217;t use it. <a href=\"https:\/\/massruum.ee\/en\/wordpress-plugins-how-many-is-too-many\/\">Read about plugin count and how many is too many.<\/a><\/li><li><strong>Missing cache and slow hosting.<\/strong> Without caching, the server rebuilds the page from scratch on every visit.<\/li><\/ol>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A lot of this can be fixed without rebuilding the site.
